“Let us make mankind in our image.” — Genesis 1:26
Trinity…
In Los Alamos, it’s a word you’ve heard your entire life. But what does it really mean?
It’s reported that J. Robert Oppenheimer chose the name Trinity for atomic test code-name after reading a poem by John Donne. In Holy Sonnets, Donne begins one famous poem with the line: “Batter my heart, three-person’d God…”
That phrase points to the biblical concept of the Trinity — a foundational Christian belief that many of us have heard about, but few feel confident explaining. We draw Venn diagrams, compare God to the triple-point of water or clovers, and eventually shrug and move on.
But consider this:
In Genesis 1:26, the Bible says,
“Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.’”
Who is the “us”?
How does that fit with belief in one God?
And in whose image are we really made?
If you’ve ever wondered about any of this — or you’re wondering now — join us for our new series:
The Trinity: Made in Our Image
Together we’ll explore questions like:
- Where does this doctrine come from?
- How can three persons be one God?
- Why does the Trinity matter for my life?
