Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) was born out of the Manhattan Project during World War II. Los Alamos was designated “Project Y”, the secret location where scientists gathered to design and develop the first atomic bomb.

After the war, the lab became the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory under the authority of the Atomic Energy Commission. As the scope of work at the lab grew, it later became LANL and operates under the authority of the Department of Energy. Today, LANL remains the crown jewel of the National Laboratory complex, conducting multidisciplinary research in fields such as national security, space exploration, nuclear fusion, renewable energy, medicine, nanotechnology, and supercomputing.
